Plan & Manage

During my summer work term I was given return dates and route cards for my canoe trips and was responsible for filling in the details. I was in charge of planning and packing the appropriate gear, food and water purification tablets with consideration of allergies or similar. I taught canoeing skills, camp craft, navigation and group leadership skills in addition to setting up camp, cooking meals securing canoes and being responsible for first aid. I practiced decision making and recognized the value of good and thorough planning on a regular basis. I was able to be flexible and work on the fly.

In first year, I made a trip plan for a flatwater canoeing business based out of the Muskoka’s with Tristan Hassanzadehand and Katie Herbert. We planned a children’s wilderness adventure and considered all components of the trips. We considered the following: activity offered, location, participants, guides, food and water needs, transportation, communication, recreation, medical, safety plan including escape routes and emergency contacts. We also completed multiple inventory needs lists for clothing, gear and medical requirements including a budget. This exercise helped build experience for the foundation of all guide trips. We received full marks for this assignment.
